Pet owners spend a significant amount of time in front of their pet’s cage. They love to watch their furry friends, how they lie down and nibble the small slice of fruits and vegetables.

When it comes to guinea pigs, it is much fun to watch them eating leafy greens and playing on the bedding. Guinea pigs can eat a wide range of foods, but a common question is – can guinea pigs have spinach?

So, Can Guinea Pigs Eat Spinach?

Yes, guinea pigs can eat spinach for sure. You can also give spinach leaves and baby spinach as well. Spinach contains more beneficial elements than harmful elements for cavies.

Like human beings, guinea pigs are unable to produce vitamin C automatically in their body. This is why external vitamin C booster can help them a lot. Spinach is rich in vitamin C as well as other vitamins and minerals. They all improve the quality of health of your furry friends.

Spinach is a favorite food to many of the guinea pigs. Pet owners often find that some guinea pigs want to eat endless spinach. Though this is not common for all types of cavies, it is vital to feed them in moderation. Along with tomatoes and cabbage, it could be an ideal treat for them.

Do Guinea Pigs Eat Cooked Spinach?

Guinea pigs don’t like cooked foods. They are fond of leafy green and so, you should give them only fresh spinach leaves.

The cooked spinach is devoid of natural taste and texture. Even many of the nutrients can be destroyed in the cooking process which offers fewer benefits to the guinea pigs.

How to Feed Spinach to Your Guinea Pigs?

Feeding your guinea pig could be a challenge if you don’t know the right way. When it comes to spinach, you should deal the process with care.

You can give spinach to them twice or thrice a week to avoid side-effects. Also, make sure you’re giving only a small portion in each serving.

Spinach can be added to the regular diet of cavies. A small portion of spinach and other leafy greens make a healthy salad bowl for your cavies. But be careful to mix spinach with other vegetables which are rich in calcium.

Spinach contains oxalates and calcium. When you mix it with calcium-rich ingredients, your guinea pig may have more calcium than the necessity. Excessive calcium can cause kidney diseases. So, spinach is certainly good when it is mixed with other foods in a balanced way.
